Religious Cult: A cult is often defined as a group with unusual or extreme religious, philosophical, or spiritual beliefs that deviates sharply from established traditions, usually characterized by a charismatic leader, a high degree of control over members, and manipulative recruitment tactics The term is also used more neutrally to describe any group with a particular set of beliefs and rituals Still, it frequently carries a negative connotation, implying isolation, social deviance, and a denial of mainstream religious tenets. *Key characteristics Unusual beliefs: May have doctrines that are considered extreme, unorthodox, or deviant from those of larger, more accepted religions. Charismatic leader: Often dominated by a single, influential leader who may demand absolute loyalty and be seen as a messianic figure. High control and manipulation: Members may be subjected to psychological manipulation, isolation from outside contacts (including family), and high-pressure recruitment. Total commitment: Demands a comprehensive and often total commitment from its followers, sometimes requiring them to cut ties with their former life, work for little to no pay, and give large sums of money. Authoritarian structure: Typically characterized by an authoritarian structure, with secrecy, hostility towards non-members, and a strong emphasis on conformity; questioning is discouraged.
