Lake Fork, Texas Fishing Report - Daily

"Excellent Fishing on Lake Fork: Crappie, Bass, and Catfish Thrive in Cooler Temps"

Listen Later

As of January 2, 2025, Lake Fork in Texas is offering some excellent fishing opportunities, despite the absence of tidal influences since it is a freshwater lake.

### Weather and Water Conditions
The water temperature has cooled down to the lower 60s, which is ideal for various fish species. The lake is currently 2.33 feet below pool, with water stained conditions. This cooler water has activated the fish, making them more aggressive.

### Sunrise and Sunset
Sunrise today is around 7:30 AM, and sunset will be at approximately 5:15 PM.

### Fish Activity
- **Bass:** The morning bite for bass has been slow, but you can catch some using spinnerbaits and chatterbaits in 3-5 feet around grass and flats. Square bill crankbaits are effective around timber in the same depth range. For bigger bass, target shallow to mid-depths, especially around stumps and grass beds on secondary points. Lipless crankbaits like the Berkley Warpig in crawfish colors, and square-billed crankbaits are highly recommended. Suspending jerk baits are also effective, especially after a cold front or on sunny days with calm winds[5].
- **Crappie:** Crappie fishing is heating up as the water cools. Tons of shad are in the mid-lake section in 36-56 feet, and crappie are following them, stacking up on timber and brush. Big white crappie are in the middle sections of the timber, while black crappie are found at the base of trees in 13-18 feet and on top of trees in deeper water. Small hand-tied jigs in white and chartreuse, as well as purple and gray, are working well. Soft plastics are also effective as the fish become more aggressive[1].
- **Catfish:** Catfishing is excellent along timber in creek channels in 18-28 feet. Prepared bait like cattle cubes or sour grain can attract a lot of channel catfish[1].

### Best Lures and Bait
- For bass, use lipless crankbaits, square-billed crankbaits, and suspending jerk baits.
- For crappie, small hand-tied jigs in white and chartreuse, purple and gray, and soft plastics.
- For catfish, prepared bait such as cattle cubes or sour grain.

### Hot Spots
- **Timber and Brush Areas:** These are key spots for crappie and catfish. Look for areas with lots of shad activity.
- **Grass Beds and Stumps:** Target these areas for bass, especially on secondary points and staging areas in 2-6 feet of water.
- **Creek Channels:** For catfish, focus on creek channels with timber in 18-28 feet of water.

Overall, Lake Fork is in great shape for fishing right now, with plenty of opportunities to catch a variety of species. Just remember to follow local regulations and prevent the spread of zebra mussels by draining water from your boat when leaving or approaching the lake[1].
