The Navy has unsealed the search warrant used in charging the Sailor in the fire that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard last summer. While I recognize that a search warrant is NOT intended to be, nor is it “proof” of a crime, there are a number of things in this document that concern me. Put aside the actual fire, and you have a picture of a Sailor who was, what we used to call, a f**ck-up. It raises so many concerns and questions that I found myself hardly able to sleep at all. Why? Okay look, I have said this before, and no doubt I will say it many more times: there is NOTHING more freighting to a Sailor than a fire. Fire is insidious, aggressive, malicious and flat out demonic. The bottom line is that you beat it or you die. Period. The most important lesson to take from all of this is a simple one: There are always exceptions to the rules. But the rules are still the rules.
