But when Montalbano discovers that the couple and the murdered young man lived in the same building, his investigation stumbles onto Sicily's brutal New Mafia, which leads him down a path more evil and more far-reaching than any he has been down before.
Excursion to Tindari is followed by the sixth novel in the Inspector Montalbano series, The Scent of the Night.

You must read the inspector Montalbano mysteries! Great stuff!
I just bought the sixth in this series. I love them so much that I bought the first six episodes of the TV series (Italian with English subtitles). Also great because they are so true to the dialogue and storylines in the books. I also love his relationship with food.... it's M.F.K.Fisher-esque.
Another great Montalbano Mystery
As the plot winds its way through this novel, you can smell the salt air and hear the wind whistling through the olive tree branches. These are wonderful stories filled with lyrical descriptions. Salvo, of course, is a jerk, but not a jerk. We love him although he is like a cactus and prickly to the touch. Other characters float to the top and make us laugh. I especially love the literary references which Camilleri generously sprinkles in his pages. Asimov! Who would have guessed? I couldn't help but smile. Of course I love the TV series as well, and so I can see the characters which are so beloved from the shows as clear as day. Our Mimi... Our Fazio... Our Catarella. And of course Ingrid, who is so clever and alluring. A great read.
Great mystery and compelling characters
I like the Inspector Montalbano mysteries and am reading them in order, and must say, this is the best thus far. I think it is number five in the series. His character and quirks are more filled in; he has a temper and shockingly slaps someone. The men who work for him risk their careers to help him and show him great loyalty despite his gruffness. Montalbano remains commitment wary re his girlfriend/wife. This series is set in Sicily, with plenty of violent crimes to solve, and delicious food to savor.
Sly wit prevails
As with all Montalbano stories, the plot is involving, leading to a surprise conclusion. The most remarkable aspect of this, and the other books in the series is how the superb translation allows for the author's sly humor to shine through. From the mouth of Catarella, person is poisson and Somalis are Smallies.
