The people of Israel continue to complain against Moses, and they turn Rephidim, the place of rest, into a place of testing and complaining. God still provides water for the nagging crowd from a rock, displaying his kindness and giving a prophetic picture of His suffering for a rogue humanity at the cross. Moses deals with the tension by going to the rock and seeking God in prayer when the Amalekites come to attack. The battle is not won by the sword but by lifting the staff of faith and dependence on God–the rock of our salvation!
