A Levite woman places her infant son in a basket on the Nile, where Pharaoh's daughter discovers and adopts him, naming him Moses. After growing up in Pharaoh's household, Moses kills an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew, flees to Midian, and marries Zipporah, daughter of the priest Jethro. Meanwhile, God hears the intensifying cries of the enslaved Israelites.
