Listen Later

The plagues have begun. Water turns to blood. Frogs cover the land. Gnats rise from the dust. Flies swarm everywhere. But to the ancient Egyptians, these weren't just natural disasters — they were a direct theological confrontation. Each plague targeted a specific deity in Egypt's elaborate pantheon, and one by one, those gods were shown to be powerless. This episode dives deep into the first four plagues of Egypt, exploring both the biblical text and the rich patristic commentary that sees in these plagues the story of God dismantling the false gods of every age. We also wrestle with one of the hardest questions in Exodus: what does it mean that God hardened Pharaoh's heart? Is God responsible for Pharaoh's choices? We draw on St. Cyril of Alexandria's powerful image — the same sun that softens wax also hardens clay — as a window into the mystery of divine sovereignty and human freedom. And we ask: where are the false gods in our own lives that God might be confronting?Key questions explored:• How does each of the first four plagues directly challenge an Egyptian deity?• What does the "hardening of Pharaoh's heart" mean — and who is really responsible?• Why does Goshen begin to be protected from the fourth plague onwards?• What false gods in our own hearts might God be confronting today?
