Shu Matsuo Post was abruptly faced with controversy when he and his wife were married; he wanted to combine their last names and was eager to have her last name as well. However, things didn't go smoothly outside of the United States. Upon returning to Japan, he found that it was incredibly rare for a husband to take their wife's last name, and when he finally was able to, it opened the door to gender inequality.
