It was a real question when the Constitution was written exactly how much power the executive would have. What would the term be? How would succession be handled? There were those that thought a powerful executive was the ONLY way the fledgling nation could be held together & prosper into a full independent country that could support and defend itself, instead of a ragtag group of states that mostly only agreed that they didn’t want someone else in charge of them all.

In the end, we ended up with a President, one that after the precedent set by George Washington, would be limited to 8 years in office (FDR tested that one but we very quickly locked that down too, in case anyone has heard different recently about the amount of time any one person can be president.
