In hindsight, using an automated insulation tester to test for capacitor failure was not ideal. Aside from the fact that it was doing an automated test as opposed to just putting out the desired voltage, it probably also auto-discharged the capacitor after the test.
It would have been much better if I'd tested the capacitor with a roughed up rectifier and powered it from the mains supply with a bulb in series to limit the fault current.
The splattered rectifier could indicate that another component shorted out and damaged it, or it could have been the bit that failed. The fusible resistor did its job admirably, both limiting the fault current and then breaking the circuit decisively.
Once again the current recording device decided that a high contrast black on white image was not something it could focus on. No wonder AvE gets mad at his camera.
Quite miffed that the rubbery (polyurethane?) bumpers on my meters have started disintegrating. Maybe it's a sign that I should upgrade to new meters. Although I rarely do electrical testing these days.
