BIKE SAFETY

RIDING A BIKE

Do you like riding a bicycle?

Bike riding is a lot of fun.

It helps you get to places you want to go.

It also helps you be healthy and strong.

It is important to be safe when you ride.

Accidents can happen, and riders can get hurt.

Keep your eyes open and your thinking cap on.

Follow the tips in this book to stay safe when you ride.

LEARNING TO RIDE

Are you just learning to ride a bike?

Practice in a park or other empty place.

Learn to balance, steer, and pedal.

When you get better, practice riding around objects.

Control the bike as you ride around cracks in the sidewalk.

Keep your balance as you ride around trash, poles, and benches.

Be careful around people who are walking.

Watch for other bike riders, too.

SAFETY AROUND CARS

Now you’re a better rider.

You’re ready to ride farther from home.

Be very careful around traffic.

Stay away from busy streets.

Cars often move fast.

Drivers can’t always see bike riders.

Obey all traffic lights and signs.

Stop at every stop sign.

Always stop and look both ways before you cross.

Cross only at intersections.

Make sure all traffic is stopped.

Walk your bike across busy intersections.

Ride single file with other riders.

Think for yourself about when to go or stop.

Do not just do what others are doing.

Which way is the traffic moving?

Ride in the same direction as the traffic.

Don’t ride too close to parked cars.

A car door can open quickly.

USING YOUR HANDS

Hold the handlebars when you ride.

One hand is okay, but two hands are better most of the time.

Use hand signals when you turn.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wear a helmet at all times.

A helmet will help keep your head safe if you fall.

Be sure to get a helmet that fits you right.

Bike gloves are also good to wear.

They help you keep a firm grip on the handlebars.

Wear bright colors so drivers can see you.

Do not ride your bike at night.

It is too hard for drivers to see you in the dark.

READY TO RIDE

Ride with friends or family members.

You are safer when you ride with others.

Now you are ready to enjoy bike riding.

Be safe and have a great time!
