But Lessing disappeared one hot July night, and Stoner knew in his gut that the man was dead. Years on the street had taught Stoner that no man is what he seems. Peeling away layers to the bone would reveal what had become of Lessing. It would lead Stoner into the underbelly of Cincinnati...into the places where desire and violence meet...into the darkest byways of the human heart where his own values would be tested to the bloody limit. Members Reviews:
Extenuating circumstances indeed!
Valin/Stoner at their bleakest best. Set against all the familiar backdrops of Downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, Valin's Harry Stoner takes on a case that is based on a real life circumstance. Once he is in Harry can't pull himself away even though his client doesn't want him in. Harry's search for the truth in the case and his need for justice take him to a place even he doesn't expect. If you enjoy the noir type detective novels and especially if you are from Cincinnati, you will enjoy this installment of the Stoner series.
Not as good as other Stoner novels
The Harry Stoner private detective series is one of the better ones around. Stoner is a hardboiled P.I. from Cincinnati who gets involved in some sometime brutally violent stories. "Extenuating Circumstances" is no exception, but it stretches plausibility a bit too much. Also Harry's comes off as a rather colorless character in this one.
Stoner's never bad, but he's usually better than this.
