President Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the most memorable speeches in American history in 1863 with the Gettysburg Address. The American Civil War was not to end until two years later but here, Lincoln was dedicating a cemetery to the thousands of soldiers killed at Gettysburg  Lincoln was asked to say a few words at the memorial...he was not even the main speaker at the event and his speech contained just 246 words. Within it Lincoln issued a stirring plea for America to pay their dead countrymen tribute by honoring principles worth dying for and a new birth of freedom.
