Shake the Dust

Extra: Blind Behavior

Listen Later

This extra feed drop is Sy reading the essay of his we just published. There isn’t a separate transcript for this episode. Below is the only audio information in the episode apart from Sy reading the essay, which you can find at the above link. Enjoy!

[An acoustic guitar softly plays six notes, the first three ascending and the last three descending — F#, B, F#, E, D#, B — with a keyboard pad playing the note B in the background. Both fade out as Jonathan Walton says “This is a KTF Press podcast.”]

Sy Hoekstra: Hey everybody. It’s Sy, just me today, here to give you the audio version of the essay I wrote that we just published at KTFPress.com called Blind Behavior. Here we go.

Sy Hoekstra: Welcome everybody to this little announcement feed drop that we're doing. Welcome from whatever feed you're listening on- if you're listening from The Hive from Sub:Culture Incorporated, or from Shake the Dust from KTF Press.

I am Sy Hoekstra. I'm here, as always, with Suzie Lahoud and Jonathan Walton. I'm also here, as not always, with Tamice Spencer.

Let's just get right into this. Suzie- what are we announcing today?

Suzie Lahoud: So we have been kind’ve dropping hints about this for a little while. We've been trying to contain our excitement and not put out too many spoilers, but it's now official. So we wanted to let you all know that we are so excited, so honored and privileged to have signed a book deal with the one and only, Tamice Spencer!

Sy Hoekstra: Yeah we did!

Jonathan Walton: Yeah!

Suzie Lahoud: So, yeah, so that's official. Throwin’ out the confetti. And, yeah, Tamice, would you be willing to just give folks a little bit of a taste of what you're hoping to dig into and offer with this book?

Tamice Spencer: Yeah, I’m excited. It's going to be a mix of personal narrative and theological reflection telling the story of how, basically telling the story of my own quiet exodus out of evangelicalism, but into, I would say, a more faithful walk with Jesus, a deeper walk with the scripture. And I think a lot of people have a lot to say on the other side, but there's not a lot of people who are kind of leading us through that journey. So I'm going to try to tell my story. It gets really personal and really deep and really real, but at the end there's worship. And I'm hoping to convince everybody that there's worship on the other side of this whole deconstruction movement. I'm excited. I appreciate you guys.

Suzie Lahoud: Well, we're so excited. And like I said, just honored that you would allow us to be on this journey with you. I can personally attest to the fact that conversations around this book have already been so powerful and impactful, and we've seen pieces of it that Tamice has already been sending us, and yeah, y'all should be excited.

And also, for those of you who don't know, Tamice, we first worked with her as KTF Press with our first anthology that came out last year. So her essay is the final essay in the book. And she's just a phenomenal writer and has a lot of wisdom to share and words to speak that folks need to hear.

Jonathan Walton: And so Tamice, on behalf of the KTF team, thank you so, so much for this opportunity. And I also want to say thank you to all of our subscribers that actually make this book possible. Your subscription goes to yes, the weekly newsletter; yes, the podcast; but absolutely publishing amazing writers like Tamice. So thank you to our subscribers and a big shout out to all those supporters of Sub:Culture! Thank you for your partnership as well.

Sy Hoekstra: All right everybody, if you want more news on the book as it comes, you can go to KTFPress.com and sign up for the free version of our mailing list there. I mean, you're welcome to subscribe too if you want to do that, but the free one will have news about the book as it comes.

Thank you all so much! We'll talk to you soon. We're so excited, Tamice.

Tamice Spencer: Thanks, guys!
