Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened down 57-points this morning from yesterday's close, at

23,422 on turnover of 7.5-billion N-T.

The market rose last Friday after recovering, as the bellwether electronics

sector - led by artificial intelligence-related stocks - regained its

footing, pushing the main board to close at the day's high.

Market watchers say investors appear to have moved away from U-S President

Donald Trump's tariff actions, and are now instead focusing on economic

fundamentals.

Luermen spring festival draws over 700,000 in Tainan

Organizers of the annual Lunar New Year event at Tainan's Lu-Er-Men Matsu

Temple say an estimated 700,000 people attended the event this past weekend

despite the cold weather.

The event marks the 'spring ox' ritual and was celebrated with a huge

two-hour long firework show, a drone light show featuring 500 drones forming

images of dragons, snakes, and the Goddess Matsu, a parade and musical

performances.

Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che was the guest of honor at the opening ceremony at

the temple in the city's Annan District.

He was accompanied by the four Japanese mayors from Fukushima Prefecture.

The Lu-Er-Men Spring Festival dates back to 1725 - and symbolized prosperity

for the coming year.

A large paper-mache ox is tossed into the crowd as part of the festival and

attendees (參加者) tear off pieces for good luck.

NKorea Kim Vows to Bolster Nuclear Program

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said an elevated U.S. security

partnership with South Korea and Japan poses a grave (嚴重) threat to his

country.

In a speech marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Korean People’s

Army, Kim said the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral security partnership

established under a U.S. plot to form a NATO-like regional military bloc is

inviting military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim vowed to further bolster the north's nuclear weapons program.

He has previously made similar warnings, but his latest statement implies

again that he won’t likely embrace US President Donald Trump’s overture to

meet him and revive diplomacy anytime soon.

Russia Island on Alert After Chinese Ship Stranding

Part of Russia's Pacific island region of Sakhalin is on high alert after a

Chinese cargo ship ran aground off its southwest coast.

Local officials say there is no fuel spillage and no danger to the crew of

the An Yang 2, which is carrying coal and heavy fuel oil.

Russia's emergencies ministry said 20 crew were aboard.

Preparations are underway to pump fuel out of the damaged vessel, which is

stranded (擱淺) in shallow waters off the region's coast.

Earlier this year, hundreds of volunteers in southwestern Russia spent weeks

trying to contain a massive oil spill from two storm-stricken tankers in the

Kerch Strait near Crimea.
