Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened down 248-points this morning from yesterday's close, at

21,047 on turnover of 5.9-billion N-T.

The market recorded its largest closing gains in history on Wednesday - after

surging nearly 800-points.

The rise was led by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.

This comes after its American depositary receipts spiked overnight as Wall

Street staged a rebound.

However, Wall Street fell overnight.

Those losses weren't as bad as those that wracked (摧殘,折磨) markets

worldwide earlier this week.

But market watchers say the downturn in U-S indexes still spooked investors

here in Taiwan.

Environmental NGOs Form Coalition to Lobby New Climate Change Committee

Environmental groups have announced the establishment of coalition to lobby

the National Climate Change Response Committee.

The coalition is being led by groups including the Taiwan Renewable Energy

Alliance, the Wild at Heart Legal Defense Association, and the Taiwan Citizen

Participation Association.

According to those groups, the coalition has been formed due to concerns that

industry might seek to obscure (遮蔽;使不分明) the government's climate

policy.

The National Climate Change Response Committee was formed in June by

President Lai Ching-te and is holding its inaugural meeting today.

Today's meeting is expected to focus on the impact of climate change on the

world and Taiwan, and the challenge of Taiwan's power supply and demand.

Current and Former Presidents Remember Doris Brougham

And,

President Lai Ching-te and former President Tsai Ing-wen are marking the

death of Studio Classroom founder and English teacher to several generations

of people here in Taiwan, Doris Brougham.

Brougham passed away multiple organ dysfunction syndrome at the MacKay

Memorial Hospital's Tamsui Branch on Wednesday.

She was 98.

Lai is thanking Brougham for dedicating herself to Taiwan and lauding (讚美)

her as a "respected educator" for "resolutely speaking up for Taiwan" in the

international community for decades and for being a "force for good" for

society.

While Tsai is thanking Brougham for always bringing her "warmth and

encouragement" during times of difficulty and challenges.

US Harris Polling Up Among Black Voters

US Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is hitting the campaign trail with her

new running mate Tim Walz, in a multi-day, multi-battleground blitz (閃電戰).

It comes as new polling analysis shows Harris is receiving a boost in support

from black voters across the country.

Mitch McCann reports:

Bangladesh Interim Leader Appeals for Calm

Bangladesh’s incoming interim leader Muhammad Yunus has appealed for calm

and urged all parties to help the country rebuild.

This comes after weeks of violence that killed hundreds of people and

prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee (逃跑) to India.

Yunus, a Nobel peace laureate, was in Paris for the Olympics when he was

named interim leader following talks among military officials and student

activists who led the uprising against a prime minister seen as increasingly

autocratic.

Yunus on Wednesday boarded a plane to return home.

Bangladesh’s military chief said that an interim government headed by Yunus

would be sworn in Thursday night.
