Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 25-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,637

on turnover of 3.3-billion N-T.


The market lost ground on Tuesday, despite Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing

helping the main board recoup some of its early losses.


While investors remained upbeat about T-S-M-C's outlook in expectation of an

investor conference scheduled for next week, old economy stocks took a hit

after investors took cues (提示) from decline on Wall Street overnight.




FM Thanks US for Bipartisan Support

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is thanking the United Statss for its

bipartisan support of Taiwan's defense.


Lin made the statement during a legislative hearing after U-S Vice President

Kamala Harris told 60 Minutes that Washington must support Taiwan's ability

to defend itself.


Speaking during the interview with host Bill Whitaker, the Democratic party's

presidential candidate said while the U-S needs to maintain a one China

policy, that includes supporting Taiwan's ability to defend itself and

ensuring (確保) the freedom of the Taiwan Strait.


According to the foreign minister, regardless of the ruling party - Taiwan

has seen a strengthening in its relations with the U-S in recent years.



Taiwan Ranks World's 14th Richest Country

And,

Taiwan has been listed in 14th place among the world's wealthiest countries in

terms of G-D-P per capita in the latest World's 100 Richest Countries 2024

rankings released by Forbes magazine.


Taiwan's G-D-P per capita stands at 76,860 U-S dollars, which puts it one

spot above Hong Kong with 75,130 U-S dollars.


The magazine's list of the richest countries in the world is compiled based

on G-D-P per capita data, as estimated by the International Monetary Fund.


However, the magazine also considers purchasing power parity when compiling

(編輯,編製) its rankings.


Luxembourg topped the 2024 Forbes list with a G-D-P per capita of 143,740 U-S

dollars.




UK MI5 Warning on Sharp Rise in Plots Against Order

The head of MI5 says Britain is facing a staggering rise in attempts at

assassination, sabotage and other crimes backed by Russia and Iran.


Ken McCallum says hostile states are increasingly recruiting criminals to

carry out plots.


The head of the U.K.’s domestic intelligence agency said in a rare public

speech on Tuesday that MI5 and police have tackled 20 Tehran-backed plots

since 2022.


He says the number of state-threat investigations undertaken by MI5 has risen

by 48% in the past year, with Iran, Russia and China the main perpetrators.


He warned that Iran could expand its targets in the United Kingdom if

Britain’s ally Israel attacks in response to Iran’s recent missile barrage.


McCallum said Russia is trying to use arson and sabotage (破壞) to create

disorder on the streets of Britain and other European countries.




Brazil Lifts X Ban After Musk Backs Down

Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that X can resume operations in the country,

ending a five-week suspension over concerns about the content on the social

media platform.


X's owner Elon Musk agreed to several concessions (讓步) in order to have the

ban lifted.
