Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 237-points this morning from yesterday's close, at

27,301 on turnover of 14-billion N-T.


The market's winning streak came to an end on Wednesday - as the bellwether

electronics sector pulled back from recent strong gains after tech stocks on

Wall Street came under pressure overnight amid reports that Oracle could

report lower-than-expected margins.






CEC on upcoming retirements of several members, impact on 2026 elections

Central Election Commission Chairman Lee Chin-yung is calling on Premier Cho

Jung-tai to submit (提交) a list of nominees to replace outgoing

commissioners - saying the upcoming retirements will affect next year's local

elections.


According to Lee, the terms of six of the commission's 10 supervisors, inccv

luding himself, will expire next month and the Cabinet has yet to nominate

anyone to fill the pending vacant posts.


Lee says the failure to approve any new members will result in the election

commission's coming to a standstill - as planning for next year's local

elections has to begin early next year.


The premier should have nominated successors for the six retiring members by

August, but has so far failed to put any name forward for the posts.






Tropical Storm Nakri forms, unlikely to affect Taiwan

And,

The Central Weather Administration says the 22nd tropical storm of this

year's Pacific typhoon season has formed in waters north of Guam.


However, the administration's forecast center says Tropical Storm Nakri is

unlikely (不太可能) to directly impact Taiwan.


The storm is expected to move northwest into waters south of Japan, before

heading in a northeasterly direction.


Meanwhile,


A weather front bringing cooler weather to Taiwan in the middle or end of

next week.


According to the weather administration, a system will move across Taiwan

from north to south on October 17 and 18 that will push dailytime highs to

below 30-degrees ….


… bringing with it the year's first hint of autumn weather.




Israel and Hamas agree to first Phase in peace deal - paving the way for

hostage release

Israel and Hamas have both signed off on Phase One of a Gaza peace deal,

paving the way (為某事鋪路) for the remaining hostages to be released and aid

to enter the enclave.

WHO: Congo Ebola Outbreak Slowly Being Contained

The World Health Organization says an Ebola outbreak in southern Congo is

starting to be contained.


The organization says no new cases have been reported since Oct. 1st.


As of Oct. 5th, the WHO reported 64 cases and 43 deaths in Kasai Province.


The outbreak was first announced on Sept. 4, marking the first in 18 years in

this remote area.


Improved logistics and field operations have helped contain the outbreak.


However, the WHO advises caution as nearly 2,000 contacts are still being

monitored (被監控).


A single missed contact could reignite transmission, especially in areas with

high population movement.
