What do restless legs, exhaustion, and hair loss have in common? 
All three can be caused by low ferritin, the storage form of iron that your nervous system, cells, and hair follicles all depend on to function properly. When ferritin drops, your body starts rationing iron away from these systems first, which is why the symptoms often appear together rather than alone. 

Why does my bloodwork say normal if my ferritin is low? 
Most labs consider anything above 12 normal, but functional ranges look for ferritin above 75 before symptoms like restless legs, fatigue, and hair loss actually resolve. That gap between lab normal and functional normal is exactly why so many people are told their bloodwork looks fine while they still feel terrible. 

Why does taking iron supplements not fix my ferritin? 
If you do not find the reason your ferritin is dropping, such as heavy periods, H pylori infection, or poor gut absorption, taking iron is like filling a bucket with a hole in it. You have to fix the underlying drain before supplementation can actually rebuild your stores.

Q: Why do I feel terrible if my doctor says my labs are normal? 
A: Normal only means your result fits inside a statistical range built from a large pool of people, many of whom are already unwell. It does not mean your body is functioning optimally, and it definitely does not mean you feel your best.

Q: What ferritin and vitamin D levels should I actually aim for? 
A: Optimal ferritin should sit above 75, not just above 12. Optimal vitamin D should sit above 60, not just above 30, since those low end cutoffs were built to catch severe deficiency, not to define health.

Q: Why does TSH alone not tell the full thyroid story?

Why isn't my levothyroxine working even though my labs are normal? 
Levothyroxine only replaces T4 hormone. If your body cannot convert T4 into active T3, your cells never get the hormone they need to function, no matter how normal your TSH looks on paper.

Is Hashimoto's the same as hypothyroidism? 
No. Over 80 percent of hypothyroid cases are actually Hashimoto's, an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland over time. Medication replaces the missing hormone but does nothing to stop the ongoing autoimmune attack destroying the gland.

What bloodwork should I ask for if I have thyroid symptoms? 
Ask for a full thyroid panel including free T3, reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies. This reveals whether an autoimmune process, not just low hormone levels, is actually driving your symptoms, and standard TSH testing alone will miss it completely.
