From Guilt to Grace

Facing Your Fear

Listen Later

Fear doesn’t have to run your life. Building on last week’s “Understanding Phobias,” Andy shares a grace-filled, practical path to reducing the power of phobias—not by flipping a switch, but by taking faithful, steady steps.

Through a candid story about confronting a mouse at work, Andy shows how progress really looks: shaky at first, then sturdier—moving from panic to functioning. He outlines a gentle exposure ladder (best done with a professional) you can adapt to your fear—whether it’s mice, spiders, crowds, or flying:

  • Start with grace: Drop the shame. Progress is slow by design.
  • Name the roots: Notice where your fear may come from (if you can).
  • Climb gradually:
    1. Think about it
    2. Look at pictures
    3. Watch videos
    4. Get nearby (zoo, stadium area, airport)
    5. Controlled contact or small “live” steps (handler-led animal encounters, small events, short flights)

All along the way: pray, breathe, and remember Deuteronomy 31:6—the Lord goes with you. One step forward is still progress.

If fear has been calling the shots, this episode will help you take back ground—patiently, safely, and with God’s help.
