Post this past weekend’s failed coup attempt in Benin. The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) is concerned that coups may soon become a new mainstream in West Africa. The Benin events mark the third coup attempt and first failed coup this year in the Sahel region. Interestingly, there have been 17 coup attempts in Africa since 2020, including 11 successful coups.
