Sermon Notes—“Transformational Faith - Faith that Rests"
We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text:

12“ ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
Deuteronomy 5:12–15 (ESV)

3For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, 4but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5You shall not reap what grows of itself in your harvest, or gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. 6The Sabbath of the land shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves and for your hired worker and the sojourner who lives with you, 7and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land: all its yield shall be for food.

Leviticus 25:3–7 (ESV)

Sabbath

Derived from a Hebrew word that means “cease” or “desist”.
The Sabbath was a day (from Friday evening until Saturday evening) when all ordinary work stopped.
It was to be a holy day, not a holiday.- Tyndale Bible Dictionary

Christians are not commanded to observe the Sabbath, but it’s always been for man’s benefit, not God’s.

27And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 (ESV)

16So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.

17For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.
Colossians 2:16–17 (NLT)

Faith that rests is faith that believes God’s promise to provide for our needs when we make the time to rest and reflect on Him.

God is always with us and is our partner in life. He hasn’t left us to try to figure out life on our own.

8It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)

He is far more capable of providing for our needs than we are.

20And if you say, ‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not sow or gather in our crop?’
21I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years.
22When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating some of the old crop; you shall eat the old until the ninth year, when its crop arrives.
Leviticus 25:20–22 (ESV)

Everything exists for His glory and belongs to Him.

We don’t need to make a name for ourselves when we belong to Him.
