Faith Through The Fire

This is Day 3 of the Book of Joshua series — Before God Reveals the Platform, He Forms the Person. Today we see something the series hasn't shown yet: Joshua making a mistake. Coming down from 40 days on the mountain, Joshua hears the noise of the Israelites worshiping the golden calf and tells Moses — "there is the sound of war in the camp." Moses corrects him immediately. It wasn't war. It was singing. Joshua wasn't being rebellious. He wasn't disobeying God. He was simply immature in discernment — and Moses, who had been in the direct presence of God, heard something completely different from the same sound. Buddy breaks down what that moment reveals about how spiritual discernment actually grows — not overnight, not even after 40 days in the presence of God, but through years of intimacy, submission to the Word, and learning to separate what you feel from what God is actually saying.

We live in a culture obsessed with being seen. Followers. Platforms. Recognition. Influence. But in God's Kingdom, the greatest leaders are almost always formed where no one is looking. This is Day 2 of the Book of Joshua series — Before God Reveals the Platform, He Forms the Person. Yesterday we studied Joshua's obedience in Exodus 17. Today we go to Exodus 24, where Joshua climbs the mountain with Moses toward the presence of God — and stops. The text never says Joshua came back down. It also never says he went all the way up. He stayed in the in-between, in the shadow of the cloud, for forty days, with no title, no recognition, not even a mention. Buddy breaks down what it means to be content being the aide — not the one on the platform — and why posture always comes before promotion, character always comes before calling, and presence always comes before God can trust you with influence. This devotional asks the question most of us avoid: are you faithful when no one sees? And why do you care if they do?

Buddy goes all the way back to Exodus 17 to trace who Joshua actually was before Joshua 1 — because God was preparing him decades before he stepped into his calling. The preparation is more important than the calling. And if you have been waiting to be noticed, waiting for the platform, waiting for people to recognize what God put in you — this study will completely shift how you see what God is actually doing in your waiting season. The question Buddy closes with is worth sitting with: Are you seeking purpose through recognition? Or are you seeking purpose in the secret place with God?

Day 2 was the Word — why Scripture is the only way to know His voice. Today is prayer — how to position your heart to actually hear Him. "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.'" — Matthew 6:9-10

Shame Is Why You Can't Hear God's Voice You haven't stopped hearing God because He stopped speaking. You stopped listening because shame convinced you that you were too dirty for Him to even want to. That's the lie. And it's the first thing the devil attacks — not your behavior, but your access. If he can make you believe you're disqualified, you stay in the dark. You stay out of your purpose. You stay silent when God is trying to speak. In today's Fire Reads, Buddy breaks down 1 John 1:9 in the original Greek — and what you find there is not a command to beg. Homologia — the word for confession — literally means "to agree." You're not confessing to convince God to forgive you. You're confessing to come into agreement with what He already said: that you are forgiven. Past, present, and future. Because of the blood. Not because of how hard you prayed. The guilt you carry isn't conviction — it's accusation. And the moment you agree with what God says over you instead of agreeing with what the enemy says about you, shame loses its voice. You keep asking God what your purpose is. The answer has been in 2 Timothy 2:21 the whole time — and it's simpler than you think. Buddy opens 2 Timothy 2:19–21 today — Paul writing to his mentee Timothy — and breaks down the one thing that determines whether God can use you as an instrument for special purposes or not. It's not your gifting. It's not your calling. It's not how long you've been walking with God. It's whether you're standing on truth or stumbling on lies. In a large house there are articles of gold, silver, wood, and clay. Some for special purposes, some for common use. But the key isn't what you're made of. It's whether you've cleansed yourself from the latter — the sin, the compromise, the garbage that weighs the spirit down. Do that, and the verse says you will be made holy, useful to the master, and prepared to do any good work. That's it. That's the whole thing. Buddy also names the lie that keeps men searching for purpose their whole lives without finding it: follow your heart, heal yourself, love yourself. If you could have done that, you would have done it already. The Word is the only thing that's actually true — and standing on that truth is the only foundation that doesn't shift. We baptized 17 people. A man with brain damage who hadn't slept more than four hours a night slept through the whole night after. And I almost missed all of it because I believed I wasn't good enough for community. My dad just went to prison again a few weeks ago. And I still honor him. Here's why — and why it's the heaviest thing you'll ever do in the kingdom. Buddy opens Romans 12 today and flips the way you understand honor completely. Most people read "honor one another above yourselves" as a nice sentiment — a call to be polite, to get along, to treat people well when they deserve it. Buddy breaks down why that reading misses the entire weight of what Paul is saying. Honor isn't agreement. It's not enabling. It's not pretending someone is mature when they're not. It's recognizing that every single person — including the ones who have done you the dirtiest — is made perfect in the image of God. And when you dishonor them, you make light of what God placed inside them. You don't just dismiss them. You dismiss the image of God in them. That's the kingdom perspective that freed Buddy to walk in purpose. Not therapy. Not time. Not distance. The understanding that honoring his mom and dad — even when they were still falling, still doing wrong, his dad still going back to prison — was the only reason he was able to steward the community standing in front of him right now. Romans 12:1–2 isn't just about personal transformation. It's the foundation: offer your body as a living sacrifice, renew your mind, and only then can you test and approve what God's will actually is. You want purpose? It's already in that verse. But you can't access it from a posture of judgment. The heaviest thing in the kingdom isn't your unforgiveness. It isn't your bitterness. It isn't your need to be right. It's honor — because honor carries the substance of who God is. "Honor one another above yourselves." — Romans 12:10
