“He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
– Matthew 13:31-32
A mustard seed is a very small seed. It produced something like a large bush. Jesus chose to compare his work in our lives to a small seed that produces a large bush. He could have chosen the acorn and the oak. He could have chosen the cedar seed that gives way to the mighty cedar — He did not.
The mustard seed produces something that is not the most impressive and grand, but it grows. It will never be cedar or an oak, but it grows. We are called to grow. We are called to grow spiritually. We are called to grow in character and in integrity. We are called to grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
