News organizations were the black boxes of the pre-digital era, making news decisions about what to cover and how to cover it with little transparency or explanation. Where major news organizations were once gatekeepers, though, they’ve largely ceded that power to platforms, thanks to what the Pew Research Center calls the “packaging and delivery” of news through Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple News and their ilk.
