In this episode of the Get Over It Podcast, Mickey Bell speaks to Russ Taff, an award winning singer-
songwriter. Russ’s music brought him across the country to crowds of thousands of people, but as his
career blossomed he began to break down. His struggles with alcoholism were difficult to overcome, but
they ultimately brought him closer to God.
Russ grew up in an unstable home. His father struggled with alcoholism, traumatizing him throughout
his childhood and telling him that he would never amount to anything. Russ’s father was also a pastor
who gave him the opportunity to play music at the church. When his father relapsed and was voted out
of his position, Russ also lost access to the church.
Russ’s career took off in his early twenties. He started by playing with the Imperials, where he played to
larger crowds than he ever had. However, he found that he had little creative freedom in the band and
moved on to pursue solo work. He released his first two albums, Walls of Glass and Medals, to critical
acclaim. However, the words from Russ’s father stuck with him, and he felt that he did not deserve it.
Soon, he learned that alcohol could quiet those thoughts.
Over many years of relapse and recovery, Russ learned that he would have to address his underlying
childhood trauma to be able to stay sober. He went to a specialized program to deal with the memories,
which helped him make peace with God.
