We live in a world fighting against fallout. Humanity (even believers) want to sidestep any negative experiences, even those that are caused by the choices we make. We like to eat unhealthy and then ask doctors to give us medicine to offset the physical problems that come from that pattern. We would love to relax all the time but still get all our work done. There’s no shortage of opportunity to define freedom as our right to choose while simultaneously demanding that my choices never cause me any problems. Mankind does this with the Lord as well. And the story we’re studying shows that this tendency is not new. Israel made a choice in responding to God’s invitation to enter and take the Promised Land. Now God declares the fallout. It is a heavy price they pay for the choices all along the way that led to the rebellion against God when they refused to enter the land. As we look at what happened, we can look at our own choices and weigh more honestly and realistically which decisions we’ll be glad we made in the long run.
