In today's podcast I reflect on a previous session I had with a parent about their child who often becomes jealous of her brother when he gets attention. We explore the concept of generational habits and the "void" that can be created when kids don't understand the challenges they have inherited. We talk about how the parent is the best person to help their child face those habits head on. I provide 4 steps to better understand the challenge in front of you and how to create new habits that will help your child overcome life's challenge.

Today's Podcast goes over 4 simple strategies for setting up your summer for success. The skills we review come right my class Parenting To Potential: Practicing Communication, Setting Goals, Emotion Management, and Alignment before Action. I talk about how to utilize these skills to create a family plan and use teamwork to make the summer fun, productive, and make the transition in and out of summer as smooth as possible.

The joy of competition is so important to the development of our children. Today we ask the question of what is more important, winning or having fun? This debate influences how we engage our kids, evaluate growth, react to wins and losses, and make the most out of the experience.

In a follow up to last week's podcast on the In's and Out's of Saying I'm Sorry, today I explore the why behind forgiveness.  It seems at time we have become a society that has lost sense of the why we do things.  We do them because they are the "right thing" to do, we are told to, or we do it because we are programmed.  But it is really in understanding the why that gives us a better understanding of how to do all of the steps to ensure healthy positive relationships.  Today's podcast is on the why and 4 steps to giving forgiveness, so that you can build and teach your kids to build stronger and more meaningful relationships.  

Most parents make sure that their kids say sorry when something goes wrong, and we often make sure to say we are sorry ourselves, but I think there is more to saying sorry that we can overlook. In the end, sorry is about ensuring the stabilization of the relationships we have with others. We do this by trying not to make the same mistakes again and ensuring the other person actually believes that. This is the power of saying you're sorry, and if we do it well, it can have long term positive impacts on our relationships with our children and with our family. This podcast covers the 3 easy steps to follow and making sure we ask the right questions to learn the right lessons.

Empathy is probably the skill I teach kids and families that I work with and recommend to others. I think it is one of the most effective ways of helping others deal with difficult situations and work past difficult emotions. I have found over the years that people know what empathy is, but don't know exactly how to use it effectively. Today's podcast will go through 6 steps to effectively use empathy and have it be the foundation for building strong trusting relationships.

In today's podcast we help out parents who are struggling with their 6 year old son who acts impulsively at school. I go through a 4 step process that is intended to give you a map on how to improve your child's internal locus of control, improved your child's ability to make good decisions, understand the importance of holding them accountable, and most importantly figure out what they needs to learn to help them overcome this developmentally appropriate challenge.

Today's podcast is focused on identifying one of the most difficult aspects of parenting, when your child engages in behavior that you yourself struggle with. How do we help our kids when we are not really sure how to help ourselves. My take is that this is actually a gift for both of you to help your child grow and develop, and also allow you to heal. Hopefully the formula I provide, which is really Motivational Interviewing, can provide guidance for you to move through these difficult challenges.

Today I help my daughter figure out how to overcome the challenge of managing friendships. As a 3rd grader, this is the developmentally appropriate age to struggle with managing friendships. Erik Erikson says that around this age kids are trying to figure out Industry vs Inferiority, and this happens as they take on challenges at school as well as figuring out the social hierarchies and where they land. It is not always easy to figure this out and this podcast is an attempt to model this conversation as well as help parents and kids understand the true nature of this struggle. This struggle often hits kids in different ways, some struggle with confidence, some struggle in school, some worry about all sorts of other dilemmas. This is my daughter's story and the way in which this struggle hits her and a great example of what it means when I say "the problem is never the true problem".

My take is that trust is the foundation of all that is. You need trust to go beyond the experience of love and allow love to grow. When trust goes, so does everything else. Abraham Maslow developed his hierarchy of needs in order to help people understand their relationship to the environment to better understand what needs to be in place for them to grow towards their potential. I think we can use that hierarchy to assist in helping people identify and communicate their experience of trusting others, to then help people build more trusting relationships.
