Ruling Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Fan Yun, an outspoken women’s rights activist, has been in the news over the past week. The sociology professor-turned-lawmaker has come under fire for what critics say is applying a double standard towards a sex scandal involving former Presidential Office spokesperson Ernesto Ting, who is also a DPP member.

Critics accused Fan and the DPP’s Department of Women’s Affairs of keeping mum about Ting’s sexual misconduct. The disgraced spokesperson stepped down last week after his involvement with four different women was scooped; among them, a female reporter.

In a Facebook post, Fan said she does not comment on any individual’s relationship problems, regardless of party affiliation, though sexual discrimination and sexual assault should be subject to public scrutiny, particularly if there is an imbalance of power between those involved. Fan also said the sex scandal involving the former Presidential Office spokesperson underlines the importance of sex education, gender equality, and relationship education.
