How do you intentionally shape the culture of a studio?
There are many studios in Valencia and this studio is a little bit more peculiar because it is based in co-working and a community. It is a collective of artists. Artists who are reunited around an idea that they share of a project.
How do people end up with their own artistic expression that doesn’t just become what everybody in the studio is doing?
Actually the beauty of it is the diversity that every artist comes and brings their own idea and project and their style, and their technique, everything. I have been learning so much. I like to highlight that everyone in the studio is a teacher and a student at the same time.
How long have you been running the studio?
It’s been three years.
Have you ver had to ask somebody to stop attending?
Oh uh. Yes. It happened once.
What did that teach you about running the studio?
Limits. Limits are the most important thing in running a studio. The clearer they are, the better. They must be written in gold and bronze as you enter the studio. (Laughter)
How do you communicate the rules for the studio to everybody?
On a simple sheet of paper that I deliver with a small gift. (Laughter) With a spoonful of sugar, like Mary Poppins.
What is the biggest misconception that new students have about clay?
There are many but I think the main one is that many people come to the studio and say, What can I bring home? What can I take in one hour? This is one of the questions that I receive the most.
