Farmland or housing? A Dutch problem.

Listen Later

Dutch farmers filled the streets in protest, blocking roads with their tractors. Why? Because politicians and urban citizens want to reduce farming, citing greenhouse gas emissions. But what would be done with the former farmland? Build more houses, apparently, since the increasing population is becoming an issue. However, new development is also constrained by strict regulations on greenhouse gases.

Having been raised on a dairy farm, our guest, Maurice Jantjes, disagrees with the proposed regulation to reduce the population of cows by 95%. He asserts that farming can be ethical for both the animals and people involved. His passion is health - he is a physical education instructor - and Maurice wants us to prioritize our wellbeing over financial concerns.
