When Jesus was asked why His disciples didn't fast like the disciples of John and the Pharisees, He was quick to tell them that the friends of the bridegroom didn't need to fast as long as the bridegroom is around. However, now that the bridegroom has gone, we are required to fast. And so Jesus often said "When you fast..." not "If you fast...".
