21 Day Fast 2016
"When" you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18
As you begin your fast today, spend some time preparing your heart for what is ahead. Our today’s passage from Matthew tells us, fasting is something we do before God, not before others. It enables us to focus on his heart and his spirit. It is an intentional form of sacrifice that clears a path for us to spend more time with him and understand his heart and kingdom desires. It is a personal, private discipline that draws us into intimacy with our Father. It is an act of sacrifice that moves us into the realm of faith. As you commit yourself to this discipline, ask God to meet you in a very real way this month.
Reflection:
What is it that you are giving up this month as part of your fast? Take some time to reflect on why you have chosen to fast that specific thing. What are you hoping to gain from this time? Set some objectives in your heart, and offer them to him.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for the spiritual discipline of fasting. As I commit myself to fast this month, help me to focus in on the things that really matter. Open my heart to yours, and speak to me. Amen.
