Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him.

And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

So he told them this parable: “There was a man who had two sons.

The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.’

Luke 15:1–3,11–12

The parable of the Prodigal Son is among the most well known scriptures.

Jesus tells this parable in the midst of sharing two shorter parables about a lost sheep and a lost coin.

Chapter 15 taken as a whole reminds us that with God we are never truly lost and God’s great joy when people return to God.
