Father Joe Carroll joined us to discuss his new book “Father Joe: Life Stories of a Hustler Priest” authored by Kathryn Cloward.  Father Joe is an icon in San Diego history rising from a parish priest to the leading community activist to fight the homelessness crisis.  Starting out with a thrift store and an empty parking lot, he transformed an ordinary St. Vincent de Paul’s in San Diego’s East Village into a Father Joe’s Village that provides housing and a range of other services for the homeless.  In his book, we learn so many great stories in Father Joe’s youth where he gained a reputation as a hustler including transporting consumer electronics, scotch, and whiskey on the train between New York City and Washington DC in his seminary days.  He also shares stories involving Boy Scouts, his relationship with the media, and working with homeless adults and children in San Diego.
