F*ck Being Nice

Are you nice or are you kind?

Nice is not necessarily kind.  While some nice people are authentically kind, that’s not always the case.  Equally, not everyone who is kind, is nice.  Nice is a personality trait that’s often confused with virtue.  Kindness is not about having an amiable personality.  It’s about being acutely aware of the needs of others in a way that is deeply empathetic, rather than superficially polite.  Sometimes nice people weaponize congeniality as a selfish, yet socially acceptable means of manipulation.  Or, as a way of eliciting a social response where the intention is more egocentric than it is compassionate.

One of the most revealing attributes that distinguish the nice from the kind is sympathy.  Nice people engage with others sympathetically.  Focusing more on how the adversity of others makes them feel.  As a result, their response is more about them than the needs of the other person.  Nice people may disingenuously feel for you, whereas kind people tend to empathetically feel with you.

In this episode me and Tiff discuss the distinctions between these two types of people.  How to spot those who are merely nice as opposed to those individuals who although they may seem a big rough around the edges are deeply caring people who often help others in meaningful ways.

Enjoy

*I was admittedly caught up in the narrative of the episode, so there is a bit of language on my part.  Can’t blame Tiffanee this time.
