There’s a see-saw from fear-based action to desire-based action.
Fear-based actions have you running from something - the saber-toothed tiger that’s coming up behind you. You run and run, and the direction doesn’t matter, because you just want that THING, whatever you’re afraid of, to stay far away. You need to get away. You need to protect yourself and your loved ones. You keep yourself tense, and self-focused because that’s your only way to survive. Let me tell you - there’s NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT when you’re running from something scary. That’s okay. I’ve coached women who were in survival mode, got therapy, got coaching (from me), and started looking up to where they were running to.
Desire-based actions have you running, too, but running toward something you want. It has you reaching for a future or a thing that you so desperately want to have. For some couples, it’s children. We work to afford IVF or adoption. For some people, it’s taking care of their parents, their children, being free to spend money the way they want to, instead of buying their groceries from a place they don’t actually like, because it’s the only place they can afford. They see a future where we help our neighbors without having to calculate whether we actually can or not. That’s a future worth reaching for.
For Susan, she learned that she wanted relief, confidence in her future, a plan that she could follow, SO THAT she could have a dignified retirement with a little bit of travel, seeing friends and family, and no money worries. She wanted safety and security. Later on, we defined that a little more. She wanted to feel accomplished and be proud of what her work produced. She wanted time to be creative and play her instruments again. To play without worrying about how to pay for it.
