Luke 2:8-11 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Three Reasons the Shepherds Felt Distant From God
1. They felt unworthy.
2. They felt inadequate.
3. They felt unloved.
Here Is the Good News
Rom 3:20-22 (NLT) For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law…We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
1. We cannot earn God’s acceptance by keeping the law.
Rom 3:20 (NLT) For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands.
2. The purpose of the law is to show us our need for a Savior.
Rom 3:20 (NLT) For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
We don’t need religion—we need Christ!
3. We are made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Rom 3:22 (NLT) We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
He came to the Shepherds, the outcasts, to make the point: No matter who you are, no matter what you do, no matter what our lot in life, I come for you because everyone needs a Savior. Every One! All of us here today! ALL!
