Feed Their Curiosity - Interview with Ingrid Katz Lucas on Child Nutrition

Listen Later

Today Amy speaks with Ingrid Katz Lucas, a speech pathologist and expert in children’s nutrition. Katz gives parents the tools to help their children have a better relationship with their food and lead healthier lives. There are learnings for us all, even as adults, in what Ingrid teaches, listen in today to find out more about our relationship with food and how much effect this has on so many elements of our lives.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Amy has a background in working with children with medical issues and after having her own children she started to question why we were teaching children to eat so many processed foods when we know factually they contribute to various physical, mental and health problems. She became more self-educated and took nutritional courses so she could help her clients more effectively as well as her own children.
Sleep can have a direct effect on nutrition. If a child, or adult, doesn’t have good quality sleep they will then crave sugary, salty and fatty foods.
Young children need their curiosity sparking with food, it’s perfectly acceptable to let them be creative and play with their food when they are young, at this age everything is decided by how it is presented to them. This is also why advertising can be so effective, that’s what we are competing with, so’ make the carrot fun’ in a way your child will react to.
Kids who help grow their own fruit and vegetables are five times more likely to then eat that type of fruit or vegetable.
Children want to have choice and control and one of the first things they realise they can control is their food, which is why it is so often a bit of a battle. Eating also affects all your different senses so there are so many elements at play. It’s easy for it to snowball.
BEST MOMENTS
“We are starting to understand the connection between the gut and our own emotional wellbeing”

“For the first time in history our children are not expected to outlive us in terms of age”

“We live in a world where we are so disconnected from where our food comes from”
“Kids learn from kids”
