Publisher's Summary:
In this sparkling debut, a young critic offers an original, passionate, and erudite account of what it means to feel Jewish - even when you're not.
Self-hatred. Guilt. Resentment. Paranoia. Hysteria. Overbearing mother-love. In this witty, insightful, and poignant book, Devorah Baum delves into fiction, film, memoir, and psychoanalysis to present a dazzlingly original exploration of a series of feelings famously associated with modern Jews. Reflecting on why Jews have so often been depicted, both by others and by themselves, as prone to "negative" feelings, she queries how negative these feelings really are. And as the pace of globalization leaves countless people feeling more marginalized, uprooted, and existentially threatened, she argues that such "Jewish" feelings are becoming increasingly common to us all.
Ranging from Franz Kafka to Philip Roth, Sarah Bernhardt to Woody Allen, Anne Frank to Nathan Englander, Feeling Jewish bridges the usual fault lines between left and right, insider and outsider, Jew and Gentile, and even Semite and anti-Semite, to offer an indispensable guide for our divisive times.
Members Reviews:
The book lists deliberations written in continental philosophy style
I bought this book after enjoying reading Baum other book about Jewish jokes, but this time I was somewhat disappointed. The book lists deliberations written in continental philosophy style. And as is quite typical to this school of philosophy, once you understand a long text about a certain subject you realize that the position is quite trivial.
How do I feel happy? How do I feel less sad
Take an insightful look at the nature of emotions juxtaposed with critical evidence from our current day society and you have a glimpse at Feeling Jewish. In the face of globalization and the recurring theme of confronting our own individuality, emotions stand right in the center for most of us. We ask ourselves a few simple questions... How do I feel happy? How do I feel less sad? How do I feel genuine? But then, these questions perhaps deny a more central idea: that emotions are inherently in conflict with each other and it's in their conflict (which inherently is painful) that we find the opening for change and ironically a way to unify ourselves by acknowledging the possible polarization of these emotions.
Read this book if you feel self-conscious. Read this book if you feel guilt/shame. Read this book, since it's for just about anyone.
