Aged 18 and drafted pick 14 into the AFL by the Adelaide Crows, Fergus Watts had the footy world at his feet. Fast forward four years and Watts had just been de-listed by St Kilda after a short lived career plagued by injury and a self-confessed lack of talent. Venturing into real life adulthood at 23, Watts worked at a brand communications agency, and quickly realised there was a gap in the market for a group of complementary agencies that operated alongside a centralised business unit who took care of the administration side of things, allowing creatives and account managers to do what they do best, so Watts started Bastion Collective.’ Fergus believes Bastion will succeed across the Pacific, because of their new agency network model. The model has worked here in Australia’s hyper competitive agency marketplace where we have an exceptionally large number of agencies for our population and business size, and often lower budgets to work with. He discusses  working with family, making the successful transition from a sporting career to founding & running a successful business & moving his young family to Orange County in the US to further expand Bastion Collectives growing presence across the Pacific. A move that can be daunting but a goal for many Australian entrepreneurs. Fergus says that “There is a significant myth about the quality of the work that comes out of the US versus what comes out of Australia. Australia has some of the best creatives and best thinkers around the world”.
