Un gran saludo a toda la comunidad VDC que cada día se hace màs numerosa, deseando que cada uno la estè pasando bien, con salud, con esos necesarios “puntos de entusiasmo” en el día al día y con esperanza aunque sea algo difusa.
A big hello to the entire VDC community, which is growing larger every day. I hope everyone is doing well, is healthy, has those necessary "points of enthusiasm" in their daily lives, and has hope, even if it is somewhat vague.
Mi participación esta semana es con un ritmo tradicional aunque el tema musical en sì no es conocido. Cuando vi que la temática esta temporada sería música navideña me fue con la memoria a infancia a un momento de reencuentro con mi tìo materno Alejandro Tovar. El fue un músico empìrico, “guataquero”, tocaba cuatro, guitarra, tres y componía unas canciones muy hermosas, románticas, sin embargo, se puede decir que “brillaba” cuando llegaba la época navideña.
My entry this week features a traditional rhythm, although the musical theme itself isn't well-known. When I saw that this season's theme would be Christmas music, it brought back memories of my childhood, a moment of reconnecting with my maternal uncle, Alejandro Tovar. He was a self-taught musician, a "guataquero" (a term for someone who plays guitar and guitar), who played the cuatro, guitar, and tres, and composed some very beautiful, romantic songs. However, it's fair to say that he truly shone when the Christmas season arrived.
Desde octubre la familia se reunía TODAS LAS NOCHES en la sala de la casa de mi abuela Gumersinda – a quien mis hermanos y yo llamábamos Mamagrande y los vecinos “Doña Gume” – a ensayar los aguinaldos que entonarìamos la noche de Navidad frente al pesebre que elaborarìa mi tìa Maria.-. Ese ensayo era acompañado por el cuatro de mi tío Alejandro y por las sonajas – especie de panderetas pero elaboradas con fragmentos de palos de escoba, chapas de refrescos aplastadas y clavitos.
Since October, the family would gather EVERY NIGHT in the living room of my grandmother Gumersinda's house – whom my brothers and I called Mamagrande and the neighbors called "Doña Gume" – to rehearse the Christmas carols we would sing on Christmas night in front of the nativity scene that my aunt Maria would make. This rehearsal was accompanied by my uncle Alejandro's cuatro and by the sonajas – a kind of tambourine but made with fragments of broomsticks, flattened soda bottle caps and small nails.
Por supuesto que en ese ensayo no podían faltar los aguinaldos tradicionales, los de los Tucusitos, los que mis tias habían aprendido en su escuela en Caucagua antes de irse a Caracas – estos, en realidad, no eran aguinaldos sino villancicos como “A la Nanita Nana”, “Marchemos zagales” y otros. Y cada año mi tio Alejandro componía un aguinaldo nuevo que era siempre el orgullo de la familia.
Of course, that rehearsal wouldn't have been complete without the traditional Christmas carols, the ones my aunts had learned at their school in Caucagua before moving to Caracas—these weren't really Christmas carols, but rather folk songs like "A la Nanita Nana," "Marchemos zagales," and others. And every year my uncle Alejandro would compose a new carol that was always the pride of the family.
Una Navidad compuso uno llamado “Por aquel camino” y nos hizo la salvedad de que este serviría tanto para la Navidad como para la Paradura del Niño ya que nos hablaba de un Niño Jesùs que venìa caminando.
One Christmas he composed one called "Along that path" and made it clear that this would serve both for Christmas and for the Paradura del Niño since it spoke of a Child Jesus who came walking.

No lo toqué con nuestro tradicional Cuatro porque… se le rompió una cuerda. La Fa# llamada también “ la cuerda del Pin” por aquello del Cam –Bur Pin – tòn. Por eso me vi obligada a tocarlo con la guitarra, pero …bueno, espero que a pesar de ello les agrade.
I didn't play it with our traditional Cuatro because… one of the strings broke. The F# string, also called "the Pin string" because of the Cam-Bur Pin-ton. That's why I was forced to play it with the guitar, but… well, I hope you like it despite that.
