When Ray convinces a talented young player's parents to let him sign with the Dodgers, Jess tries to sabotage it due to her own past as a pushed child athlete, leading to a confrontation where Ray helps Jess gain perspective so she can support Diego's dreams.
Episode Summary:
Ray takes Jess to scout a talented young baseball player he's excited about named Diego. Although Diego has major skills, his parents want him to go to college instead of playing pro ball.
Ray gets his scout to convince Diego's parents to let Diego sign a Dodgers training contract. However, Jess disapproves of Diego starting his sports career so young. At a celebratory dinner with Diego's family, Jess sabotages the deal by telling the parents it's a bad idea.
Furious, Ray confronts Jess demanding to know why she ruined Diego's opportunity. Jess finally opens up about her traumatic past as a figure skater forced into constant brutal training by her obsessive Olympic skater mom despite hating it.
She saw herself in Diego and worried he'd end up depressed like she did. Ray helps Jess understand not every child athlete has unsupportive parents like hers. Diego's family loves and nurtures him.
With new perspective, Jess apologizes. In the end, Ray's scout manages to convince Diego's parents after all. Diego gets signed to the training contract, changing his family's life financially. Jess and Ray reconcile, closer than ever. The episode ends on an upbeat note, with Jess promising Ray a date with her gorgeous, funny, baseball fan friend.
