Today’s guest, Terri Pilawa was on top of the world. She had a great job, an amazing son, met her husband and was in the best shape of her life. Everything was going well until she felt like she was suffocating and couldn’t breath. Terri was in denial and couldn’t believe this was happening to her.
After suffering from a misdiagnosis of adult asthma for 5 years and many trips to the emergency room, Terri was diagnosed with NSIP Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2012. After days, months, years of not knowing if and when she would survive, she believed that “Giving up is too easy” and fought the good fight for her life.
KEEP FAITH ~ KEEP FIGHTING
Terri shares her starting over again and again journey as she fought for her life to the end. Hear the incredible details of how she felt like she was drowning or suffocating daily, and hung on until the end, begging for lungs.
ONE LIFE FOR ANOTHER
Just when she thought her life was coming to an end, having her DNR (Do not Resuscitate) in order, and having trouble breathing when responding to the nurse, “I need my lungs!” "I NEED MY LUNGS!" Shortly thereafter that night, on June 24, 2015, at 10:00 p.m. her doctor called and said she had lungs for her, not a perfect situation, but had lungs for Terri.
The celebration of yelling and cheers were put on hold as she was too weak and getting too excited would use too much of her limited supply of oxygen. By midnight her donor was off the use of a ventilator support and by 3:00 a.m. the journey of a 13 hr surgery, Terri was getting lungs.
What became a tragic end of a life for one family, was a gift of life for another. Terri was fortunate enough to meet her donor’s family and hear how her Donor, Maria Quinteros, a 22 year old woman, said, “YES” to being a donor, saved Terri’s life and now lives inside her, celebrating the gift of life every single day.
Terri is truly blessed and grateful for her second chance of life.
