Grasp the Bible

Fight the Good Fight - Part 1 (1 Timothy 1)

Listen Later

Welcome to episode four of Grasp the Bible.  In this episode, we are opening up the Book of 1 Timothy and covering chapter 1.  The title of the message is, “The Church and Its Message.”  We discuss:

  • Background information (author, date, recipient, purpose)
  • The salutation (vv. 1-2)
  • Timothy’s task at Ephesus (vv. 3-11)
  • Paul’s testimony (vv. 12-17)
  • A call for consistency (vv. 18-20)

Key takeaways:

The issues that Timothy had to address in the first century church were not just one-time events.  Pastors in every generation since has confronted these as well.

  • Confronting false teachings,
  • Understanding why God gave the Mosaic Law,
  • Ensuring that Christian traditions are faithfully passed down to the next generation.

Paul is transparent in describing who he was before he met Jesus.  He calls himself a:

  • Blasphemer
  • Persecutor
  • Violent man
  • The chief of sinners

His point was to demonstrate to Timothy and to others that if God can not only forgive such a person, but then put that person into ministry, then God can transform anyone’s life.

Quotable:

“God does not choose a person who is worthy, but by the act of choosing him He makes him worthy.” - Augustine

Application:

For church members:  Our lifestyle and testimony aid in the spread of the gospel concerning Jesus.  The world is watching to see if Christians are truly different from unbelievers.  Moreover, they want to know that before a Christian met Christ, he or she acted in ways that they can relate to.

For church leaders:  The purpose of confronting false teachers is not to shame or punish them.  Rather, it is to turn them to the production of love based on a committed conscience.
