Dr. Stephen Haycox is a professor emeritus at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He earned a BA (summa cum laude at Seattle University), an MA and a Ph.D. (University of Oregon) in History. His honors include the Distinguished Teaching Award from the UAA Alumni Association in 1989, the Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence from the University of Alaska in 2002, and the Alaska Governor's Humanities Award in 2003. The Alaska Historical Society recognized him as Alaska Historian of the Year in 2003. He regularly contributes commentary for the Alaska Dispatch News, as he did previously for the Anchorage Daily News.
