On January 3, 2023, I reached out to law enforcement because the agency I was working with, Family Promise, refused to assist me in filing a protection order against my apartment’s maintenance man. Their excuse? They claimed they could only help with cases involving someone I was dating.

Without Officer Mike’s guidance, I wouldn’t have had the information or support to move forward with the protection order on my own. This conversation highlights the barriers survivors face when seeking safety and how the very organizations meant to help often fall short.
