Members Reviews:
Title is misleading
The title of the book is misleading. There's precious little fighting going on, except for the few times when Wharton is in close proximity to the troops and the Hun dropped a bomb nearby. This is her travelogue as she traveled from one end of the line to the other at various times. If you're looking for good WW1 action, this is not the place.

One of the best descriptions of the first day Paris receives notice of a national mobilization notice during the WWI.
Poop
Running dialogue, great use of the ENGLISH language, tiring storyline never ending slow drive through France. Very descriptive of the French countryside.

A rarely heard voice from a woman on the front in France during WW I. Edith Wharton speaks with keen journalistic observation about the emotional effects and strategic military movement that resulted from this horrific first affront to European civility.
