In 1995 the Aum Shinrikyo cult set off 11 devices on trains throughout the Tokyo subway system, releasing deadly sarin gas. Thirteen people were killed and 5,500 more were injured.
Almost 20 years earlier more than 900 people died in a murder-suicide at the People’s Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana, making it the largest massacre in the US until 9/11.
