Don't "should" on yourself. Forget budgeting; create a spending plan that's realistic, as barebones as you can make it when money is tight, compartmentalize and determine what's negotiable. Be proactive with what you owe; call your lenders, banks, IRS, card companies, etc., and let them know your circumstance/ask for assistance. Learn what protections the CARES Act offers and take advantage of those provisions (borrow from retirement, take a loan from your 401k, take advantage of the 0% interest on student loans and deferrals). Have a conversation with your money and create a healthy relationship with it. Get a financial education; hire a professional or get low-/no-cost training from local colleges or online sources. What to do once we get to the other side of this crisis: Save or pay off debt? (Save so you don't go into more debt). Retirement or college funds? (You can't borrow for retirement.) The importance of knowing your financial status/health especially if your spouse/partner is "in charge" of the money to avoid financial infidelity or abuse. Teaching your kids what things cost, including their education. Reconsidering community college to keep student loan debt down. When to declare bankruptcy (and remembering that student loans can't be written off by a BK).
